Akarua is a prestigious winery in the heart of Bannockburn, Central Otago, a region recognised as New Zealand’s premier Pinot Noir producer. Managed under the vision and quality signature of Baron Edmond de Rothschild, the winery combines precision, terroir expression and respect for nature to create wines of distinctive purity, elegance and mineral character.
Grape variety
Pinot Noir
Harvest: 2024
Terroir
Akarua’s vineyards are located on terraced hills in Bannockburn – the warmest and sunniest sub-region of Central Otago.
The soils are slate, gravel and alluvial sediments, providing excellent drainage and concentration.
The climate is continental, with strong temperature amplitudes – warm days and cool nights, which results in a natural freshness, focus and complexity in Pinot Noir.
Vinification
The grapes are hand-picked and carefully selected. Partially fermented with whole bunches to add aromatic depth and structured tannins. Fermentation is carried out at a controlled temperature in small vessels for maximum precision.
Aged in French oak barrels (partly new) for 10–12 months, which gives a fine balance between fruit, spices and elegant woodiness.
