ABOUT THIS DUNCAN TAYLOR OCTAVE

The Octave range uses ex-sherry wood octaves, which are approximately 60-litre casks, for a short finishing period to gently expand the flavour profile without overpowering the distillery character. This stemmed from the simple premises that there is more interaction between the wood and spirit over a short period of time in a small cask than in a large cask, allowing for a faster melding of wood, air and alcohol. Due to these small sized-casks, each Octave release is very limited to less than 90 bottles.

This Glen Garioch 11 Year Old Octave spent the final 4 months of its maturation in an Octave cask.This release of only 75 bottles is exclusively for Blgaria, is bottled at cask strength, non chill-filtered and natural colouring

A whisky merchant by trade, Duncan Taylor Scotch Whisky was brought by Euan Shand in 2008, returning the company to Scottish hands. Since then, Duncan Taylor has gone on to celebrate its 80th birthday in 2018 and Euan now runs the company as Chairman.

Today, Duncan Taylor have a number of award-winning collections. My favourite three are their Single Casks, bottled all natural, their Octave Invigorated, with turbo-charged flavour from small sherry casks, and their Rare Auld Grain collection of exceptionally well-aged single grain whiskies.

Duncan Taylor has its origins in Glasgow where the company was initially a merchant and broker of Scotch whisky casks within the Industry.

Devotion to the principle of providing only the finest casks to be filled at Scotland’s leading distilleries has been a key feature of the company’s history.

Duncan Taylor has been laying down casks from premium Scottish distilleries for decades and now owns one of the largest privately held collections of vintage and rare scotch whisky casks.

In 2002 Duncan Taylor moved its headquarters to Huntly, on the periphery of Speyside, Scotland’s largest whisky producing region, where it has its own facilities for cask storage, bottling, a cooperage and very soon, its own distillery.

At that time, Duncan Taylor ceased the “brokering” of whisky casks to distillery companies and bottlers to focus on the production and marketing of its own brands, and diversifying the portfolio with the addition of gin and rum.

Octave Invigorated Whiskies

For upwards of 40 years the team at Duncan Taylor has experimented by maturing whiskies in smaller casks with great success.

Our research stemmed from the simple premise that there is more wood interaction with whisky over a shorter period of time in a small cask than in a large cask, therefore allowing a more rapid melding of wood, air and alcohol.

After a second maturation the octave casks have refined the whisky, enhancing its hue, taste, form and character. The flavour profile is gently expanded, a little more sophisticated with the commanding presence of a mature, well-balanced Scotch Whisky.

They have become ‘Octave Invigorated™.

The Octave Collection is extensive with something for all tastes, be it a single malt, a single grain or a blended malt whisky. Featured distilleries include Aultmore, Bhunnahabhain, Brackla, Caol Ila, Glenallachie, Glen Moray, Highland Park, Miltonduff and Tobermory.

The Octave Premium Range was launched in August 2019 showcasing years of maturation expertise. Octivation has added a new dimension to the flavour profiles of these exceptional whiskies from some of Scotland's most iconic distilleries, bringing out the best in each rare dram.
