Marqués de Murrieta is one of the oldest and most respected wineries in Rioja, with a long history and reputation for quality and classic styles. Dalmau is their more modern and expressive line, focused on expressing the terroir, featuring Cabernet Sauvignon and Graciano for added structure and depth alongside Tempranillo.
Terroir and Soils
Origin: The vineyards are from Pago Canajas, part of the Marqués de Murrieta estate.
Altitude: around 465 metres above sea level.
Wine-Searcher
Soils: mainly clay-chalky / clay-limestone with a stony (rocky) surface layer.
Vinification and ageing
Hand-harvested, with full selection of grapes to ensure quality.
The wine varieties are fermented separately: Tempranillo – in stainless steel (stainless steel vessels), Cabernet Sauvignon and Graciano – in small wooden vessels (oak vats).
Daily operations such as “remontage” and rack-and-return to extract color and tannins.
Aging: 21 months in new French oak barrels (Allier) with a volume of ~225 l.
Released in 2018 after racking – about 15,040 bottles produced.
Organoleptic characteristics
Aroma: Deep and ripe dark fruits (black fruits), notes of black pepper and spices, balsamic and mineral aspects, with oak influence – cedar, smokiness.
Taste: Full-bodied, with dense and juicy tannins, good balance between power and elegance. The finish is long, spicy and with a sense of complexity.
Food Pairings
Suitable for richer meats and dishes that can withstand tannins and oak notes, for example:
- Baked or grilled lamb
- Veal / grilled red meat
- Game
- Also mature cheeses
Serving temperature: around 16°–18°C
Aging potential: Excellent - can develop for another 10–15 years from harvest (i.e. until around the mid-2030s and beyond), if stored well
