The history of Strega liqueur began in 1860, provoked by a legend from old times. In an area near the city of Benevento, Italy, a large walnut tree grew. At night, ladies would gather near it to practice witchcraft rituals. Over time, the place became a meeting point for witches from all over the world. During these nocturnal gatherings, they created a liquid that had the magical power to bring couples who drank from it together forever. Nowadays, Strega is not produced under a walnut in the forest, but its composition includes more than 70 plants from all over the world. In the largest quantities, it contains Ceylon cinnamon extract, Florentine iris, Apennine juniper and Italian mint. The amazing yellow color comes from the precious saffron that is added. The finished liqueur is aged for long periods of time in old oak barrels so that all the flavors can mix and flow into each other and no one overpowers the others. Nowadays it is the most popular liqueur in its native Italy. Its taste is truly unique and cannot be confused with anything else. It is traditionally consumed as a digestif (neat or on ice), but nowadays it is also used to make a number of cocktails.
