The story of Midalidare is a story of action, in which dreams become reality. Our dream took us to the other side of the world, to a magical place with beautiful nature and exceptional wines – New Zealand. The idea of creating wine abroad was born from our desire to try something different and challenging, to improve our skills, to gain new knowledge.
Marlborough is the most important wine region in New Zealand. It is particularly famous for its powerful and spicy white wines made from Sauvignon Blanc. There are three main sub-regions of Marlborough: the Wairau Valley, the Southern Valleys and the Awatere Valley.
The central part of Marlborough is locked between two large rivers – the Wairau and the Awatere. There, in the heart of the Southern Valleys, lies the Waihopai Valley and the Craiglochart vineyard – home to Midalidare New Zealand Marlboroug Saoyvignon Blanc.
The Craiglohart vineyard is located along the Waihopai glacial river. The unique microclimate, resulting from the influence of the river and the hilly terrain, the altitude, the large temperature amplitudes and the specific soil composition form an exceptional terroir for Sauvignon Blanc and determine pronounced varietal aromas in the wine. The vines are planted on a terraced plateau along the river. The soils are of volcanic origin, sandy, medium to highly stony and with high water permeability. The large temperature amplitudes, although a prerequisite for spring frost, ensure optimal acid content in the grapes.
The Sauvignon Blanc vines are an average of 15 years old, from the MS (Mass Selection) branch, which is grown only in New Zealand. Due to the drier climate, the plantations are irrigated with water from the Waihopai river if necessary. The formation is single Guyot (vertical shoot positioning). The yield is controlled and reduced to 1500 kg/hectare. The regulation of production is a one-time procedure, when the shoots are 15-20 cm high, the so-called green pruning. One of the innovative practices applied in viticulture is the so-called Gravels - placing river stones around the roots of the vines, because the stony fractions serve as a heat accumulator.
